Lifecycle control begins in the field. When an engineer removes a meter, they capture the serial number, job details and photographic evidence at source.
From there, the asset is tracked through the reverse logistics network – including totes, smart lockers and distribution centres – giving customers near real-time visibility of what has been removed, where it is and what remains outstanding. But visibility is only part of the picture. Customers also need to know what should happen to each asset next.
Ownership resolution creates the value
Over its lifecycle, a meter can pass through several MAPs. Ownership records change, data can be incomplete, and field returns do not always arrive with enough clarity for first-time repatriation.
These gaps drive unnecessary handling, avoidable exceptions, rejected deliveries and extra administration. Thinventory’s Smart Returns solution addresses this at source by cross-referencing removal data, faceplate recognition and customer-supplied asset records to validate ownership.

These assets should not move through a standard returns process without the right training, containment and controls.
